William Saliba must give up Champions League and return to Arsenal

William Saliba (left) is the Under-20 player to have the most playing time this season, at 2250 minutes. The 20-year-old was able to show maturity and composure as a Marseille centre-back. This season, Saliba has appeared 35 times.

William Saliba had to bury his dream of playing in the Champions League after Marseille failed to make him permanent. The centre-back has finally returned to Arsenal.

William Saliba signed for Arsenal from Saint-Etienne in 2019, but he has never once played on the pitch in an Arsenal shirt. Saliba continues to be loaned out to several clubs.

Most recently, he was loaned to Marseille for the 2021/2022 season yesterday and the results were amazing. Saliba managed to start and help the team finish in second place in Ligue 1.

At the end of last season Saliba said he wanted to stay at Marseille to play in the Champions League next season. However, it seems Arsenal said otherwise.

Wanted to survive Marseille had scored an equalizer in the 85th minute through William Saliba after using Dimitri Payet’s pass. However, the referee disallowed the goal because William Saliba was caught offside. (AFP/Franck Fife)
At the age of 21, Saliba won the Young Player of the Year award for Ligue 1 2021/22. He was also called up to the French national team in recent international trials.

This means that Saliba’s potential as one of the talented young defenders is starting to show. So it’s only natural that he wants to stay at Marseille and try to keep improving.

Saliba’s comments some time ago heated up the situation. He admitted that he wanted to return on loan to Marseille.

“I want to go back [to Marseille] and play in the Champions League . I’ve never played in that competition and I want to experience it,” said Saliba.

Back to Arsenal

As soon as Saliba’s comments surfaced and were heard in London, Arteta gave a firm response. He wants Saliba to return to Arsenal and that loan spell has helped Saliba a lot.

Most recently, Saliba voiced a different comment. He admits that after all he is an Arsenal player.

“I am an Arsenal player and I am still under a two-year contract there. I will make sure to follow the pre-season with Arsenal,” said Saliba.

“I have never played for Arsenal and I wanted to prove myself that I had the opportunity to play for this big club and the fans.”
