You will surely agree that the most memorable moment of the 2022 Oscars was when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on stage. Smith did this because he couldn’t accept Rock making jokes about his wife’s condition, who appeared bald. When receiving the “Best Actor” award, Smith apologized for his actions.
However, Smith’s request was not enough to fix the mess that quickly spread around the world via live broadcast. The Academy Awards even immediately held an urgent meeting one day after the event, to consider the punishment that would be given to Smith. Now, the Academy has decided on the punishment that must be received by Smith for his actions.
According to Deadline, the board of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has ruled that Smith will be barred from attending the Oscars for the next 10 years, either in person or virtually. Smith immediately gave his response after receiving punishment from the Academy board.
“I accept and respect the Academy’s decision,” Smith said in a brief statement shortly after the Academy board announced his sentencing.
Despite being banned from attending the Oscars for the next 10 years, Smith is still allowed to keep the trophies he won this year. In addition, Smith also still has a chance to be nominated for an Oscar. Prior to receiving punishment from the Academy, Smith first took the initiative by withdrawing from the Academy membership on April 2, 2022
