Adapted from Ben Dunn’s comic Warior Nun Areala , the Warrior Nun series is Netflix’s new show this July. The synopsis can be seen from the title. A group of nuns who are part of the secret organization Order of the Cruciform Sword, a women’s organization founded since the First Crusade.
Each generation has a Halo Bearer, a female fighter who inherits Halo, an inheritance from an angel to the first Warrior Nun, Arela. Those who inherit Halo will gain superpowers; become stronger, heal wounds faster, as well as the ability to penetrate walls.
The first season focused on Ava, a teenager from an orphanage who died and came back to life after receiving Halo. It’s just that Ava wants freedom after all her life just being in an orphanage. Until he finally accepted this responsibility and fought on behalf of the Warrior Sisters.
Prologue Warrior Well
The story revolves around the theme of religion versus science. There are sections that question the Vatican’s hegemony in preserving historical artifacts and what science can do when it comes to studying these artifacts.
It’s not just a battle between good and evil. But also intrigue and politics going on in the Vatican and even the Sister Warrior organization itself. Each character has its own problems and shortcomings which will affect the dynamics of the plot and story.
Each cast gave a slick appearance. But Alba Baptista shines as Ava: from a spoiled teenager who lost her way to a fighter ready to throw a tantrum. There is also a humorous section where Ava has a monologue with herself. Although it often interferes with important dialogue in the story.

The 10 episodes in the first season feature various mysterious characters with different backgrounds. Unfortunately the Netflix series only focuses on Ava, without highlighting other characters who have the potential for a wider variety of stories. Like most Netflix series; save for next season.
Netflix’s new universe
Netflix often streams comic series, such as The Umbrella Academy . The Warrior Nun series season 1 is the beginning of Dunn’s manga-style comic strip which was first published in 1994. The comic series tells the story of Sister Shannon Masters, a modern warrior from the Crusades.
Shannon is The Chosen One chosen by Arela to fight agents from hell. While this series focuses on Ava, not Sister Shannon. Played by Melina Matthews, Sister Shannon is only present in a few episodes.
The idea of the Vatican keeping a big secret was already popular through the Assassin’s Creed and The Da Vinci Code franchises. Warrior Nun is not strong enough to raise this issue. Moreover, the plot is still rigid and the storytelling is messy between the main and supporting plots.
Warrior Nun has the potential to be an entertaining series. Not so many action scenes, but unique and dynamic. Coupled with humor and creative choreography. When will there be a nun walking around with a sword on her back?
To fill spare time, the Warrior Nun series is still worth watching. Although this series feels like other teen dramas, but with the theme of superpowers, it raises religious issues and action scenes. At least with a fresh premise and hope for a more solid second season.
