UEFA took a quick response to the blunder that occurred in the 2021/22 Champions League last 16 draw . UEFA decided to conduct a re-draw to address the error.
Monday, 13 December 2021 At 18.00 WIB UEFA will hold the draw for the Champions League. A total of 16 teams that qualify from the group stage will know who their opponents are in this round of 16.
The draw was led by UEFA Deputy Secretary Giorgio Marchetti. He was accompanied by the Head of Competition UEFA, Michael Heselschwerdt and also Andriy Arshavin as ambassadors for the 2021/22 UCL Final.
The draw at first went smoothly. However, UEFA some time ago issued an official statement stating that the draw was repeated.
Through their social media accounts, UEFA confirmed that they would re-draw the last 16 of the Champions League. They said a technical error forced them to repeat the draw.
“Due to a technical glitch with the software as well as an external error instructing the officials to determine who can meet each other, there was an error in the draw for the Champions League last 16.”
“As a result of that mistake, the draw was declared invalid, and will be drawn again at 15.00 CET (21.00 WIB)”
The Root of the Problem
The root of this blunder lies in the third draw. Where at that time will determine who Atletico Madrid’s opponent will be.
At that time, Atletico Madrid could no longer face Manchester City and Real Madrid. Because the two teams have been drawn to meet Villarreal and Manchester City.
As a result, Atletico should have been drawn against Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Ajax, Juventus, Lille and Manchester United. However, in the video, it can be seen that UEFA’s Head of Club Competitions, Michael Heselschwerdt, did not enter the MU ball into the draw.
