Some time ago, the England national team released the names that will fight in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers in September. England will play Hungary, Andorra, and Poland. Overall, the England squad is not much different from the squad that was brought in at the 2020 European Cup.
Even so, there are several top names that were not brought by Gareth Southgate in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers later. Of course this makes many British fans wonder. Guess who are they? Here’s the list.
Mason Greenwood – Manchester United
Mason Greenwood has scored 3 goals in his first 3 Premier League games this season. In fact, Greenwood became the decisive victory when Manchester United against Wolverhampton in the third week of the Premier League. Even so, Southgate did not bring the 19-year-old player in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers later.
Greenwood’s position was replaced by Patrick Bamford who looked stunning with Leeds United last season. When brought to Euro 2020, Greenwood suffered a serious injury so he had to miss the event. This may be a separate consideration for Gareth Southgate to bring him again in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
Eric Dier – Tottenham Hotspur
Looking stunning in the first 3 Premier League matches has not been enough to convince Southgate to recall Eric Dier. Last season, Dier did not perform well with Tottenham Hotspur. Even so, he managed to be consistent at the start of this season.
Dier is known to have made 45 appearances for The Three Lions . Although not brought in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, it is not impossible that Dier will enter the England squad at the World Cup if he continues to consistently maintain his good performance.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka – Manchester United
There is no place for Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the England squad as long as Kyle Walker, Reece James, Kieran Trippier and Trent Alexander-Arnold are still fit at their clubs. It will be very difficult for the 23-year-old to replace any of the players above. Aaron Wan-Bissaka was rumored to be changing citizenship to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka appeared disciplined in the first 3 matches of Manchester United in the Premier League. Even so, it was not able to make Gareth Southgate glance at him.
Ben Chilwell – Chelsea
After being ignored by Thomas Tuchel in Chelsea’s early games, Chilwell was also ignored by Gareth Southgate by not bringing him in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. Southgate implied that Chilwell’s lack of playing influenced his decision to call him. At Euro 2020, Chilwell was only a shadow of Luke Shaw who managed to look impressive.
Kieran Trippier is predicted to be rotated to left-back as there is only Luke Shaw who plays as a left-back in the England squad in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. On the other hand, Chilwell must work hard to replace Marcos Alonso at Chelsea in order to regain his position. So far, Chilwell is known to have made 14 appearances since 2018.
