The world’s smartphone market is in free fall, Samsung is even on top


As is well known, the world’s economic conditions are not doing well. The number of sales of various production lines in a number of countries has decreased, and smartphone product sales are no exception .

The research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) noted that global smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2022 decreased by 8.9 percent compared to 2021. Even so, in the midst of the sluggish global smartphone market, Samsung actually managed to record the highest sales.

1. Global smartphone sales have decreased

According to a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC), worldwide smartphone shipments declined 8.9 percent in the first quarter of 2022. The COVID-19 pandemic that hit China again caused the world smartphone market to hit a low.

Not to mention the lockdown policy in China which made consumer sentiment weaken and experienced the biggest decline. In addition, the outbreak of the Russo-Ukrainian war also put deep pressure on the global smartphone market

2. Samsung smartphone sales have actually increased

Even so, in the midst of the weakening world smartphone market, the South Korean electronics giant, Samsung, managed to become the vendor with the highest sales. Quoted from Techloy, Samsung smartphone sales increased by 9 percent year-on-year (YoY ) in the April 2022 period.

Samsung continued to lead the global smartphone market sales for the third consecutive month in 2022. In fact, Samsung became the number one brand in the Indian market in April 2022 for the first time since August 2020.

3. Highest in the last five years

Launching Sammobile , Samsung became the best-selling smartphone brand in April 2022 in the last five years; highest since June 2017. Galaxy series smartphones are the main source behind Samsung’s success.

The Galaxy S22 series and Galaxy A phones that are sold in the mid-end segment drive high sales figures in a number of lines. This success led Samsung as the global smartphone market leader with a market share of 24 percent.

4. Comparison with other competitors

Meanwhile, two of Samsung’s competitors, namely Apple and Xiaomi, experienced a significant decline in market share in the last four months. Citing IDC data, Apple was only able to be in second place by capturing 18 percent of the global smartphone market share throughout April 2022.

Meanwhile, the Chinese vendor, Xiaomi, won a market share of 12.7 percent. This ranking was then followed by OPPO and Vivo which only achieved a market share of 8.7 percent and 8 percent.

5. Samsung is predicted to dominate the global smartphone market in the second quarter of 2022

In the first quarter, Samsung has distributed 74.5 million smartphones worldwide. According to Techxplore, it is believed that Samsung will easily regain control of the global smartphone market in the second quarter of 2022.

The reason is, the arrival of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Fold 4 is predicted to be able to maintain Samsung’s sales achievements. The two latest Galaxy releases are reportedly ready to be released in August to September 2022.
