The 37th edition of the Independent Spirit Awards took place on Sunday, returning in an in-person format following last year’s virtual ceremony. Many of the biggest names in the independent film community have traveled to Santa Monica beach in hopes of taking home the most coveted awards in independent film. While the Spirit Awards typically take place the week before the Oscars, this year’s unique COVID-influenced awards season calendar meant they took place nearly a month in advance.

Hollywood couple Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally served as presenters on the proceedings. This year’s nominee class draws on largely Oscar-barred films, with independent hits like Oscar nominee “The Lost Daughter”, “C’mon C’mon” and “Zola” amassing the most. number of nominations. “The Lost Daughter” has cleaned up, with three wins for Netflix including Best Picture and Best Director Maggie Gyllenhaal. Simon Rex, not presented for an Oscar, won the best male lead award for A24’s “Red Rocket”, while Taylour Paige won best female lead for the success of the summer 2021 studio “Zola”. As far as television is concerned, “Reservation Dogs” took home big wins, as did “The Underground Railroad” and “Squid Game”. See the full list of winners below.
