The activation of seismic alerts in different areas of Mexico City (CDMX), this Monday morning, was an error derived from maintenance work, reported the head of Government, Claudia Sheinbaum.

In a press conference, the capital’s president explained that 850 loudspeakers were activated in various parts of the capital. “It wasn’t a scheduled review process, but they were maintaining the server,” he explained.

Minutes later, the CDMX Center for Command, Control, Computing, Communications and Citizen Contact (C5) detailed that there were 851 loudspeakers that were activated by mistake and offered a apology “for the inconvenience and affectations” provoked to the citizens of the capital.

“For now review continues to publicize the causes and more information about this inconvenience,” the agency reported on Twitter.

Although he did not rule out any sanction or call for attention, Sheinbaum Pardo announced that, before the possibility of “human error” a “review of public servants as well as of the companies that were carrying out this process” must be carried out [de mantenimiento]”.

Despite the fact that the National Seismological Service (SSN) did not report any movement earthquake that warranted the activation of the seismic alert, at 11:50 this Monday the unmistakable sound of the system caused alarm in the public and preventive evictions in various properties in the capital.

Almost three weeks after the National Drill, on April 19, users on social networks reported that not all of the C5’s speakers activated. This generated confusion, because although it was a false alarm, there were citizens who claimed to have felt an earthquake.

Following the activation report, the capital’s police chief, Omar Garcia Harfuch, reported that condors from the Secretary of Citizen Security (SSC) flew over Mexico City to rule out possible damage.

For its part, after carrying out the review protocol in response to the earthquake alert, the Mexico City Metro reported that the movement of the trains is fluid and that “all stations are offering service.”

However, the version offered by the Collective Transport System (STC) is far from the citizen reports, which on social networks They claim slow service stopped trains and up to 30 minute wait between stations, which has caused crowds on the various lines.
