FC Groningen has a spectacle against N.E.C. won 4-3. The night started with a great atmosphere from the fans and ended with a blast from Romano Postema which led Trots van het Noorden to victory in injury time. Substitute Postema scored twice in the last ten minutes, Michael de Leeuw and Jørgen Strand Larsen also scored for FC. Thanks to this victory, FC rose to 8th position in the Eredivisie.
An odd first half with no fewer than five goals – two of them for FC – and a red card for the visitors. However, one of the highlights of the night came before a ball was kicked. FC supporters showed what a Groningen night was like through a truly extraordinary atmospheric campaign. A journey full of landmarks for real Groningen residents.
FC Groningen started the game on fire. Michael de Leeuw gave the Pride of the North the lead within two minutes. The captain received a cross from Tomas Suslov, won the game against his opponent and headed in. His fiftieth Eredivisie goal for FC, 1-0.
N.E.C. equalized before fifteen minutes of play. Goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh made a fine save from a corner but when the rebound came at the feet of Ali Akman and the striker cut through, even the keeper had no chance, 1-1. Minutes later, Jonathan Okita’s shot hit the crossbar and the visitors seemed to take over the momentum.
Souffian Elkarouni was sent off after 18 minutes with a red card after a distraction with Jørgen Strand Larsen. N.E.C. had to continue with ten men and FC immediately took advantage. Strand Larsen headed home a cross from Laros Duarte well, tenth league goal for top scorer, 2-1.
After half an hour of play, Nijmegen’s side leveled again after a stunning free kick from Lasse Schöne and a few minutes later they even took the lead. Lost the ball in the Groningen defense punished by Magnus Mattsson, 2-3.
Strand Larsen came close to equalizing just before half-time. The Norwegian who has scored with a bicycle kick this season and saw a bicycle kick hit the post, tried again with a bicycle kick. His brilliant effort was parried just under the bar by goalkeeper Mattijs Branderhorst. FC had to go to the locker room after the spectacle with a 2-3 deficit.
In the second half, Pride of the North resolutely looked for an equaliser. Tight crosses from Suslov’s side and Mo El Hankouri didn’t make it to Strand Larsen’s final station. N.E.C. Despite the fact that it’s played with one less person, it’s also still dangerous.
Even though FC increased the pressure on N.E.C. and sent a dangerous cross into the crowded penalty area from the side, they failed to score. It was the two substitutes who broke the ban. Damil Dankerlui crossed in from the right after which Romano Postema won a header and headed in. FC’s third goal was headed in, 3-3.
With ten minutes remaining, FC did everything they could to snatch the three points at Euroborg. Dankerlui created danger once again down the right and Neraysho Kasanwirjo saw his powerful shot blocked. Hard work pays off. Postema was crowned match winner by nearly shooting the ball over the net in injury time. The striker struck a second, shooting FC to victory and placing 8th in the rankings.
