[Review] Back to Zombieland: We took the same and started over

Released on October 30, Return to Zombieland marks the return of Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita and Little Rock to the big screen. Ten years after the first work that for years became a genre staple, this little band’s return looks more like a remake than a real sequel.

Life goes on in Zombieland, and while some of the survivors seem to have adjusted to the living dead now inhabiting the streets, a new breed of hard-legged, smarter, and above all tougher, threatens the peace once again. In addition, the mood was not good in the emergency families of Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita, and Little Rock. The pair formed by two young lovebirds are struggling, while Tallahassee is finding it increasingly difficult to accept Little Rock’s emancipation desires, whose hormones seem to be messed up.

Although Return to Zombieland is almost 10 years after the first series of the franchise, we must admit that the situation has not changed much, both in terms of characters and the storyline that awaits them. The film contains the elements that made its predecessor a success, and despite Little Rock’s teen crisis that took 10 years and only a few inches, nothing has changed. Going back to basics assumed by Ruben Fleischer is far from just having a downside. Finding the entire original cast after a decade of hiatus at first, was a real feat. Despite the years gone by and their respective careers, Woody Harrelson (Tallahassee), Jesse Eisenberg (Columbus), Emma Stone (Wichita) and Abigail Breslin (Little Rock) have responded, and it’s great, this return to Zombieland will have a whole another flavor without the original quartet. Another important element we found with pleasure in this second work, the utterly absurd and ridiculous screenplay humor, which plays the cards of over-quoting in terms of weakness. What makes us (almost) forget the weakness of the scenario that often struggles to survive, is the lack of a really credible plot.

Obviously, some new features are needed to be featured in the program, and if there aren’t many of them, they have the benefit of working, albeit less successfully. Returning to Zombieland is a chance to discover some new characters, like the very temperamental Nevada, played by actress Rosario Dawson (Luke Cage, Daredevil, Jessica Jones), the pacifist hippie Berkeley (Avan Jogia) or the mindless bimbo. German Zoey). The characters may be ultra-caricatured, they have the advantage of being somewhat humorous, and come to enrich a scenario based in large part on the charisma of the protagonists. The group leaves Bill Murray’s house and the fun fair but will explore a new playground that’s well anchored in the funny and crazy universe of the saga. However, we would have liked the new zombie threat, which was mentioned extensively at the beginning of the film, to play a more important role in the story.

The approach is assumed, Return to Zombieland is above all a declaration of true love to fans of the first work . Having become an institution in the survival comics genre, the saga has its fans in mind, and it’s probably also for this reason that it struggled so hard to break away from its first part, even if that meant taking on the remake atmosphere more often. that on . There are also plenty of references to the 2009 feature film, from introductory scenes to post-credits sequences.
