[REVIEW] Amazing Mickey Mouse Winter

Anime, Entertaiment, News

Mickey Mouse and friends are back for the second season of “The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse.” Instead of releasing two shorts per week; this season, the shorts are separated by seasons with the three shorts put together to make a 25-minute episode. The first episode focuses on winter in “The Wonderful Winter of Mickey Mouse.” The three shorts that make up this episode involve Mickey, working as a janitor, dreaming of making snowflakes, but accidentally making dangerous ones. He must turn to his cleaning skills to save a city that is in the direct path of a snowflake. In the second short; Mickey Donald, and Goofy are about to go to the ski cabin but are trapped by an avalanche. Goofy gets claustrophobic and that causes the three to find a unique way to escape the snow.

My favorite of these shorts is the second one. While I’m not a fan of how Goofy was animated in this series, he shines through in this short film. Between his claustrophobia and delusions where he thought he saw a fur coat, but it really was a bunch of jungle creatures, he was the cutest part; like Goofy usually. It’s great to see how Mickey and Donald try to free the three of them while Goofy goes through his delusions. And it’s a thrilling ski chase down the mountain as the cabin is now skiing and an avalanche starts chasing it all the way to the ski lift and back down the mountain. I love how they managed to continue shortly after the cabin escaped the avalanche by having Goofy tell the snow it was going down the wrong side of the mountain, so immediately changed direction to chase the cabin again. This is my favorite short film in the series and the first time I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Goofy in a long time during this animated scheme.

What I didn’t like the most was the last short film. That being said, it’s still cute and I’m glad to see it. I love to see Mickey and Minnie want to put on a show for their fans, but can’t because of Goofy’s ice fishing, hockey team, or even Zamboni. Meanwhile, Minnie is ready to quit for the day because her leg hurts. But when Mickey becomes overwhelmed by everything that stands in their way, Minnie steps up and encourages him to continue with the show. It’s a great short film, it’s just my least favorite of the three.

For me, the first short film fell in the middle. I love seeing Mickey Mouse dream about making snowflakes but his boss doesn’t want him to be anything more than a janitor. He will prove his point. And, although the snowflakes would be dangerous to fall on their own, he used his cleaning skills to break them down and create the biggest snowfall his boss had ever seen. That is fun. This is a solid short film.

I love how Disney created this season. While I enjoyed viewing the shorts every week during the first season, I thought it made more sense to combine several of these shorts to make one long episode. I just wish there would have been more than four episodes to do that. However, if they only have enough for four episodes, I support them to label them by season to stand out.
