British giant Chelsea will be challenged by Al Hilal in the 2021 Club World Cup semifinals, Wednesday 9 February 2022. The match at Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium (Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates) is scheduled to kick-off at 23:30 WIB.
Al Hilal is the champion of the 2021 AFC Champions League. The Saudi Arabian club is now managed by Leonardo Jardim, a Portuguese coach who previously coached Sporting Lisbon and AS Monaco.
Meanwhile, Chelsea came with the status of the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League champions. Chelsea have never won the Club World Cup. The Blues have only been runners-up once, namely in the 2012 edition, where they were beaten 0-1 by Corinthians in the final.
For this edition, Chelsea has just started playing in the semifinals, while Al Hilal has already played in the previous round. Al Hilal qualified and met Chelsea after beating Al Jazira 6-1 through goals from Odion Ighalo, Matheus Pereira, Mohammed Kanoo, Salem Al-Dawsari, Moussa Marega, and Andre Carrillo (penalty).
Chelsea come after last weekend struggling to beat 3rd division Plymouth 2-1 in extra time in the fourth round of the FA Cup. Had been left behind in the 8th minute, Thomas Tuchel’s troops turned to win through goals from Cesar Azpilicueta in the 41st minute and Marcos Alonso in the 106th minute. Goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga made a big contribution by neutralizing the opponent’s penalty in the 118th minute.
On paper, Chelsea are the favourites. However, Chelsea still have to be vigilant. Because, Al Hilal has several experienced players against them, including Odion Ighalo (ex-Manchester United) and Matheus Pereira (ex-West Brom).
The winner of this semi-final will face the winner of the semifinals of Palmeiras vs Al Ahly in the final. Will the Blues Chelsea win easily against the representatives of Saudi Arabia?
