‘Only Pedro Acosta Can Go to Moto2 After Just One Year in Moto3’
The owner and manager of the Red Bull KTM Ajo Team , Aki Ajo , firmly believes that at this time, only Pedro Acosta deserves the opportunity to immediately move up to Moto2 even though he has only been in Moto3 for a year . This he conveyed through the official release of KTM Factory Racing on Tuesday (7/9/2021).
Acosta did give a big breakthrough in his first year in Moto3. He immediately finished second and took the podium in the inaugural 2021 series in Qatar. The 17-year-old racer even shocked the MotoGP paddock after scoring a historic victory in the Doha Series after starting from the pitlane.
So far, the Spaniard has collected six podiums, five of which are victories. He has also consistently won points in every race, until now he is the strongest candidate for the Moto3 world champion with a collection of 201 points, 46 points ahead of his closest rival, Sergio Garcia.
Important for development as a racer
Fully aware of his great talent, plus the proof through his flashy achievements, Acosta immediately offered himself to KTM to be promoted to Moto2 next year. He feels confident that he can perform well in the class once he gains experience and learns many valuable lessons.
“Going to Moto2 was my target because I believe it’s a step I have to take. Obviously there’s a lot more I need to learn. I could have done it in Moto3, but if you talk about the details and my development as a rider, then this feels like a step. that’s right,” Acosta said.
This statement is supported by Ajo, who is known to be cold-handed and has taken care of big-name riders such as Marc Marquez, Jack Miller, Brad Binder, Johann Zarco, Miguel Oliveira, and Jorge Martin. He understands this move is very risky, but has great faith in the talent of Acosta, who will partner with Augusto Fernandez.
KTM feels honored to be able to support Pedro Acosta
Coming up to Moto2 after only one year in Moto3 is a big step. However, if there is one rider who can do it, it is Pedro. We have a lot of faith in him and we will support him. , said the Finnish man.
Director of KTM Motorsport, Pit Beirer, also had a similar comment. He said he was happy to see Acosta with great ambition to explore experience in a higher racing class. This step can certainly support KTM’s desire to field Acosta in MotoGP at least in 2024, when he is 20 years old.
“It’s an honor to support Pedro’s desire to move from Moto3 to Moto2. What he has shown in his first season in the world championship is amazing. We believe he can maintain this momentum. He will focus on his targets this year, and we will face the next challenge together- the same,” said Beirer.
