Live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the upcoming Netflix series that fans have been anticipating. This is because many fans hoped that the live-action series would be as interesting as the animated series that aired on Nickelodeon in 2005-2008. Avatar: The Last Airbender itself will tell the story of the adventures of a young Avatar named Aang who must maintain the harmony of nature by stopping the tyranny of the Fire Nation led by King Ozai.
Since it was first announced in 2018, the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series has finally started to move forward by being worked on by Albert Kim and directed by Michael Goi and Roseanne Liang. For the cast itself, several actors have been confirmed to be involved in the series, such as Gordon Cormier as Avatar Aang, Kiawentiio Tarbell as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko, Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Uncle Iroh, Lim Kay Siu as Gyatso’s teacher, and Ken Leung as Admiral Zhao.
Recently, Albert Kim via his personal Twitter account said that there are many big scenes in the series, as well as new characters that will soon join. In the tweet, Kim also showed his seat on the set as an executive producer. There was no further explanation regarding the new character he was referring to. Many fans assume that Kim’s statement refers to a completely new character who has never appeared before in the original series The Last Airbender.
It’s not uncommon for Netflix to add new characters to its various adaptations. In addition to making it Netflix’s trademark, this is also done to adapt the original material with stories that are deliberately made fresh and look new. For example, such as the initial casting of Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai, which was not actually shown in the original material at the beginning of the episode. It is possible that Ozai was raised earlier to tell the background story of Zuko who began to hunt Aang for the sake of his own father, namely Ozai.
Even so, it is also possible that the new characters in question are characters from the original series who have not yet received actors in the live action series , for example, Sokka’s lover named Suki. For more details, we’ll just have to wait for further news developments . It remains to be seen whether the story will be the same as in the original series or if there are some adjustments. Live-action production of Avatar: The Last Airbender itself, is scheduled to begin next week.
