Movie Review Paddington 2


Just for info for those who haven’t seen the first film: Paddington is the name of an anthropomorphic bear. Who migrated from the jungles of Peru to England. Which later, upon arrival in London, was adopted by the Brown family.

The Paddington Bear itself is a fictional character. The first appeared in a children’s book published October 13, 1958. The title: A Bear Called Paddington. The author of the book is Michael Bond. Which, sadly, passed away at the age of 91. The day before filming for the film Paddington 2 was finished. However, the last Paddington book he wrote was published in April 2017.

The story of the film Paddington 2 is a continuation of the previous film. The cute bear who usually wears a blue jacket and red hat, is said to have stayed at the Henry Brown (Hugh Bonneville) family home. The story is, one day, Paddington (Ben Whishaw) gets an assignment to buy a pop-up book. At the antique shop Mr. Gruber (Jim Broadbent). As a gift for Aunt Lucy’s (Imelda Staunton) 100th birthday. However, unfortunately, the gift has been stolen. Paddington then began his mission to find out who the thief was.

Like the first film, Paddington 2 is also a combination of live-action and animation that uses CGI (computer-generated imagery) technology. The director is still the same. Namely: Paul King. For the sake of working on this film, reportedly, Paul King refused an offer to gush Wonder (2017). In fact, the film adapted from the novel starred a number of well-known names. Starting from Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson, to child actor Jacob Tremblay.

Btw, as if following in the footsteps of the first film, which brought Nicole Kidman as the villain, this Paddington 2 film also relies on well-known actors as its antagonists. Namely: Hugh Grant. Who plays Phoenix Buchanan. A narcissistic actor. Whose career is on the wane. Which, it is said, only starred in dog food commercials.

In addition, Paddington 2 has also aired in the UK. And, as a result, like the first film, until now, the response from critics is also very positive. In fact, on the Rotten Tomatoes site, the rating is still perfect. Aliases 100%!

The producers, Heyday Films and StudioCanal, it seems, have predicted the warm reception. The proof is, in June 2016, they boldly stated that they would make a third film. In fact, Paddington 2 still hadn’t started filming at that time.

Meanwhile, in America, Paddington 2 has not been released. Initially, The Weinstein Company was the distributor of this 103 minute film. However, the sexual harassment case that hit the big boss, Harvey Weinstein, changed everything. StudioCanal doesn’t want the Paddington brand, as a family film, to be tainted because of the Weinstein case.

StudioCanal then looked for other distributors for the Americas region. And, after going through various processes, reportedly, Warner Bros. Pictures which will be the new distributor for North America. Paddington 2 is scheduled to be released there on January 12, 2018. We’ll just have to wait for the results at the box office.
