Movie Review Pacific Rim

The Jaeger program is growing. By giving birth to a new generation of giant mecha robots. Which is much more powerful and sophisticated. The main character in Pacific Rim Uprising is Jake Pentecost (John Boyega). Yes, from his name you can guess that he is the son of the late General Stacker Pentecost. Which, it is said, has sacrificed himself to blow up an interdimensional portal at the end of the first film.

In Pacific Rim Uprising, it is said, Jake Pentecost becomes the pilot of the latest generation of Jaeger. The so-called Gypsy Avenger. Possibly, he will partner with Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi). A Japanese girl raised by the late General Stacker Pentecost. Who used to be the co-pilot of Gypsy Danger with Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam).

Judging from the name, which is similar, Gypsy Avenger is indeed an upgraded version of Gypsy Danger. But, of course, the next-generation giant mecha robot is bigger, more sophisticated, and more fully armed than its predecessor.

Meanwhile, Raleigh Becket, in this Pacific Rim Uprising film, does not appear. Reportedly, Charlie Hunnam, who played the main character in the first film, could not participate in this second film project. Due to his filming schedule clashing with King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017).

However, even so, the fans need not be disappointed by the absence of Charlie Hunnam. Because, apart from John Boyega, who is already famous through the Star Wars franchise, and Rinko Kikuchi, there are also a number of new stars who are ready to enliven the Pacific Rim Uprising film. Among them is the Fast & Furious franchise dropout: Scott Eastwood. And a rising Chinese actress: Jing Tian.

Different from its predecessor, Pacific Rim Uprising does involve a lot of cast from China. This is related to the acquisition of Legendary Pictures, the producer of the Pacific Rim franchise, by the Chinese Wanda Group. In addition, the first film was also very in demand in China.

The new owner of Legendary Pictures, of course, hopes that Pacific Rim Uprising will be as successful or even more successful than its predecessor. However, many observers doubt the sequel to the film this time. One reason is the position of the director. Which is no longer held by Guillermo del Toro (GdT).

GdT, who just won the Best Director Oscar, is still one of the producers of Pacific Rim Uprising. However, he is no longer a director. Because he prefers to focus on working on The Shape of Water (2017). Which yesterday became the Best Film at the 90th Academy Awards.

In addition, those who occupy the replacement seat for GdT in Pacific Rim Uprising are also classified as new names. Namely: Steven S. DeKnight. In fact, this film is his debut as a feature film director.

However, despite being underestimated, when interviewed, Steven S. DeKnight emphasized that he would not disappoint Pacific Rim fans. He has studied in depth all aspects in his first film. Especially, the original elements left by GdT. According to him, the first film was very important. Because there are several things that are closely related to Pacific Rim Uprising.
