Tom Cruise never dies. At the age of 56 years, Nicole Kidman’s ex-husband returns as Ethan Hunt. In the film Mission: Impossible – Fallout. Which airs in Indonesian cinemas starting this Wednesday (25/7).
So, actually, it’s been 22 years since Tom Cruise has kept his role as Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible film franchise. It’s pretty long. In fact, none of the cast of James Bond, which incidentally is a rival film franchise to Mission: Impossible, has been able to survive that long.
The story of Mission: Impossible – Fallout itself is a continuation of Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015). At the end of the fifth film, it is said, Ethan Hunt et al managed to arrest Solomon Lane (Sean Harris). Sort of like James Bond. Which, in the end, rebelled and formed a criminal organization.
In the film Mission: Impossible – Fallout, it is said that Solomon Lane managed to escape. To be precise, after the van carrying him off the highway and into the river. IMF (Impossible Mission Force) Secretary Alan Hunley (Alec Baldwin) then assigns Ethan Hunt and his team to hunt down Lane.
However, unfortunately, the hunting mission ended in failure. Ethan Hunt et al were unable to capture Solomon Lane. In fact, with his new group called the Apostles, Lane intends to attack the three holy cities: the Vatican, Jerusalem, and Mecca, with nuclear bombs! Ethan and his team must race against time to prevent such a major disaster from happening.
What makes Ethan Hunt even more trapped, apart from facing Solomon Lane, he also has to save himself from being hunted by an assassin named August Walker (Henry Cavill). Who is assigned by the new Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Erica Sloane (Angela Bassett), to finish off the members of the IMF. Because they are considered failed to catch Lane.
As told in the previous film, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, the CIA is indeed at odds with the IMF. They want the secret service that houses Ethan Hunt is closed. Because their actions are often out of control and endanger state security.
Btw, besides Tom Cruise, Mission: Impossible – Fallout is also re-strengthened by Ving Rhames. Together with Tom Cruise, who first skyrocketed through Top Gun (1986), the Luther Stickell actor is the only actor who has appeared in six Mission: Impossible films since 1996.
In carrying out their impossible mission, Ethan Hunt and Luther Stickell are again accompanied by Benji Dunn. The computer whiz character played by Simon Pegg has always appeared since the film Mission: Impossible III (2006). So, you could say, the three of them are the IMF’s core team.
Another thing that is interesting, Mission: Impossible – Fallout also returns the character Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson). The former British secret agent MI6, it is said, helped Ethan Hunt’s team in the last Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation film. You could say, he is the female version of James Bond. Besides Ilsa Faust, the old female character who also returns in Mission: Impossible – Fallout is Julia Meade.
