It’s been more than 80 years since it first appeared on the big screen, this eighth wonder of the world is a classic. The film King Kong has been rebooted several times using the same formula as the classic work that was released in 1933. But this time the reboot of the Kong film has a different story from the classic, and will form a shared universe with another beast, Godzilla.

Kong: Skull Island is set in 1973 during the withdrawal of US troops from Vietnam. Monarch – a company that previously appeared in Godzilla (2014) – through its leadership, Bill Randa (played by John Goodman) finds a satellite photo of an unknown island and asks the government for help to carry out an expedition to that place. The expedition was led by a military force led by Preston Packard (Samuel L. Jackson) and guided by British mercenary James Conrad (Tom Hiddleston) and photographer Mason Weaver (Brie Larson) to a place in the Pacific Ocean called Skull Island.

Unlike the previous 2 King Kong films which were released in 1976 and 2005, Kong: Skull Island looks more savage and brutal. When compared to the previous 2 Kong films (because I haven’t watched the 1933 version), Kong here is like a superhero when the previous 2 films were literally Beauty and the Beast . Kong doesn’t fall in love with the blonde girl who often screams in Kong’s hands throughout the film until they finally go ice skating together. Kong, who became the savior, is similar to Godzilla (2014) , it is interesting how the 2 monsters that guard human life from attacks by other monsters finally fight in Kong vs Godzilla which is planned to be released in 2020.

The pace is more enjoyable than Godzilla , whose story development is so slow and tends to make you sleepy before ending spectacularly in the last 30 minutes. If Godzilla is 2 hours long it feels like 3 hours, Kong: Skull Island is 2 hours long but only feels like 90 minutes. The dialogue is also fresher and lighter than the films that have the same universe as them, even though most of the time it’s just me and the other side of me laughing at his jokes. The soundtrack selection was cool, including rock and roll songs .

In addition to Kong’s size which is much larger than the previous Kong films, in this film Kong also never leaves Skull Island. So there is no Kong scene on top of the Empire State Building which has always been in the previous 3 Kong films, and is one of the most iconic scenes in film history. Kong’s absence from his island made it possible to further explore what was actually there. Similar to Journey 2: Mysterious Island , a more savage and cruel version.

Kong: Skull Island delivers what one would expect, a film that focuses on Kong showing off his skills against other monsters and wrapped in cool CGI. Wait until the end of the credits for additional scenes , Samuel L. Jackson plays Nick Fury recruiting Godzilla and King Kong to become Avengers. Uh. There’s really a post-credit scene , hint about the next installation which is guaranteed to be worth the waiting time even though the cinema staff has seen it.
