1. Doctor Strange (2016)
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is the second solo film from Doctor Strange in the MCU so you really have to watch the first film first. This is of course very important so that you can get to know more about Strange’s background in the second film later.
Then, for those of you who have watched, the first film is also quite mandatory for you to watch again. Because, you will be able to see the development of Stephen Strange’s character from being an arrogant doctor to being a wise enough hero.
2. Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Doctor Strange is considered to be an important character in Infinity War because he has the Time Stone that Thanos is after. This film is also enough to show how strong Strange’s magical abilities are since their appearance in the first film.
Oh yes, this film also plays an important role in the forerunner of Wanda Maximoff being “crazy”. You see, in this film Wanda loses Vision which is the love interest of the girl.
3. Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch are not the main characters in this Infinity War sequel. In fact, both of them only appear in the final battle moments of the film. However, Endgame is still a film that you must watch because it introduces us to how the concept of time travel in the MCU universe works and how it affects the Sacred Timeline.
The concept of time travel and how the timeline works, which is quite complex, is likely to be discussed again in the Multiverse of Madness. So, it is quite important for you to watch Endgame first so that you understand when the film has started discussing the Sacred Timeline.
4. WandaVision (2021)
Scarlet Witch actually made her debut in the MCU through the film Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). However, you can actually understand the outline of Scarlet Witch’s background through her solo series, WandaVision. Because, in this series there are several flashback scenes when Wanda was a child until she became a HYDRA experiment which gave her super powers.
In addition, all the events in this series will also be related to the Multiverse of Madness considering that Wanda is one of the main characters of the film. Rumors that Scarlet Witch will be the villain in the Multiverse of Madness also started from this series. Because, in this series, Wanda is holding the residents of one city hostage just because she can’t control her powers after Vision left her dead.
5. Loki (2021)
Neither Doctor Strange nor Scarlet Witch has appeared in the Loki series. However, this one series discusses a concept that already exists in their upcoming film title, namely the multiverse.
The main focus in this film lies on Loki who runs away using the Tesseract in the time travel scene of Avengers: Endgame. Loki’s actions had caused the Sacred Timeline to branch for some time due to a phenomenon that was not in accordance with its supposed destiny. However, it turns out that there is a special agency called TVA that maintains the stability of the Sacred Timeline so as not to create a new timeline.
Well, in the last episode of this series, the person who is responsible for keeping the universe with only one timeline is finally killed. This incident then made the Sacred Timeline gave birth to many new branches or what we can call the multiverse. Oh yes, in this series we also get to know the concept of a Variant, or doppelgnger of certain characters from other timelines or universes.
6. What If…? (2021)
Even though it has an animation format, the What If…? also has an important connection to the Multiverse of Madness. Because, this series presents an alternative universe from various storylines that we have seen in a number of MCU films. Broadly speaking, this series is the first MCU project to feature the existence of another universe or multiverse.
In the fourth episode of this series we can also see the figure of Variant Doctor Strange who is considered to be evil and responsible for the destruction of his universe. Well, reportedly the Variant will appear in the upcoming Multiverse of Madness.
7. Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
As we know, Doctor Strange had appeared in the film Spider-Man: No Way Home and had a fairly important role. This is because at the end of the film, Strange’s spell to erase people’s memories of Peter Parker somewhat affects the stability of the multiverse.
Strange’s actions are also considered to be the trigger for conflict in the upcoming Multiverse of Madness. So, you really have to watch No Way Home first in order to understand the storyline of the Multiverse of Madness. Moreover, the Multiverse of Madness is reportedly set only a few months after the phenomenon at the ending of No Way Home.
