Liverpool will host Villarreal in the first leg of the 2021/22 Champions League semifinal , Thursday 28 April 2022. The match at Anfield is scheduled to kick-off.
On paper, Liverpool, who are very strong at home, are certainly the favourites. However, Liverpool cannot be careless. Because Unai Emery’s Villarreal concoction this season has turned into a giant killer.
Villarreal got rid of Juventus 4-1 on aggregate in the round of 16. Certainty of qualifying was even obtained by beating Juventus 3-0 in Turin in the second leg.
Villarreal then met Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals. Once again the status as underdogs , Villarreal actually created a surprise again. Winning 1-0 in Spain in the first leg, Villarreal qualified after holding Bayern to a 1-1 draw in the second leg at the Allianz Arena.
Villarreal have a neat and disciplined game organization. With a solid team, they were able to force Juventus and Bayern to tears. They are also believed to have a chance to score at Anfield.
Liverpool have to perform much better than their previous two home games in the knockout stages, where Jurgen Klopp’s side were beaten 0-1 by Inter Milan and held to draw by Benfica 3-3.
Equally important, Liverpool must not consider Villarreal as an easy opponent. They must have the mindset that every team that reaches the semifinals of the Champions League has the same chance of qualifying for the final. Respect for the opponent will not weaken them. That can actually be one of the keys to victory.
