LCR and RNF Expired Contracts with Manufacturing Teams End of 2022

Sports, News

LCR Honda and WithU Yamaha RNF expired with the manufacturer at the end of the 2022 season. LCR signed a contract with Honda with a duration of 2 years in 2020. Meanwhile, RNF only has a duration of 1 year with Yamaha.

The withdrawal of Petronas from the team made by Razlan Razali is suspected to be the reason the Yamaha manufacturer only extended the contract for one year for the MotoGP racing team. So, where will the RNF go if the contract extension option is not extended? What will the fate of LCR be like if faced with the same problem?

1. Lucio Cecchinello Racing (LCR)

Lucio Cecchinello started a partnership with Honda since 2006. For 2023, LCR and Honda have not signed a new contract.

This is certainly a concern for LCR in the middle of the 2022 MotoGP season. LCR must immediately find a new place to take shelter.

LCR Honda haven’t been on the podium since they last did so in 2016 with Cal Crutchlow. Alex Marquez and Takaaki Nakagami, their riders in 2022, have so far not shown good performances in the first three MotoGP series.

2. WithU Yamaha RNF

The collaboration between the Sepang Racing Team under Razlan Razali with the Petronas oil company ended in 2021. Looking at the 2022 MotoGP, Razali took WithU as the main sponsor of his racing team. He was lucky to get a 1 year contract with the manufacturer.

The Malaysian team has a big hand in projecting its drivers. Fabio Quartararo and Franco Morbidelli are two riders who started their careers under the auspices of Petronas SRT Yamaha.

Yamaha needs new talents at this time. The presence of the satellite team is one of their priorities. This will make the regeneration of Yamaha racers continue to grow.

3. Ducati has no additional options and new KTM extends contract with Tech3

Ducati has the most satellite teams in the premier class of MotoGP. The team from Borgo Panigale got a cooperation contract with three teams: Pramac Racing, Mooney VR46, and Gresini Racing.

Pramac and Ducati have started working together since 2005. They will continue to work together. Mooney VR46, on the other hand, has agreed to a 2-year contract period until the end of 2023. Meanwhile, Gresini Racing runs out of contract at the end of the 2024 season.

Unlike the Ducati team, the KTM factory only has one satellite team. Tech3 have extended their contract by 5 years in 2021, so they can breathe a sigh of relief.

I feel proud and honored to continue working with KTM. This moment is the first moment for an independent team to enter into a long-term contract, said Tech3 founder Herve Poncharal, quoted by Crash .

4. One satellite team in each manufacturer

Dorna has a long-term vision to place one satellite team in each manufacturer. With that composition, the manufacturing team has the same space and facilities to develop themselves.

Ducati is the team with the most satellite teams this season. This is not in line with Dorna’s expectations as a MotoGP promoter.

5. Suzuki and Aprilia want to have a satellite team

Among the factory teams competing in the premier class, Aprilia and Suzuki do not have a satellite team. They had approached LCR in 2016.

I was contacted by Suzuki, Aprilia and KTM. To be honest, I’m still happy with the situation at Honda, Cecchinello was quoted as saying by Speedweek .

Suzuki with new manager Livio Suppo is known to be a bridge between Honda and LCR. His close relationship with Suppo could be one of Cecchinello’s options for a partnership.

In addition, Cecchinello has affinity with Aprilia. This Italian racer’s team has won with Aprilia in the 125cc and 250cc classes.

MotoGP 2022 is still long, LCR and WithU will expire their contracts with each manufacturer. Both require precautionary steps. Do you think the contracts of the two teams will be extended?
