Italian League: AC Milan on the Path to Scudetto, Can repeat 2003/2004 season?

AC Milan is now at the top of the Italian League Serie A standings. The victory over Salernitana in the Serie A 16th giornata, Saturday (4/12/2021), brought the Rossoneri to the top of the standings after being in second place for a long time, to be precise since the end of the third giornata.

AC Milan’s 2-0 win over Salernitana brought the Rossoneri team to 38 points, one point ahead of city rivals Inter Milan.

Napoli, who lost 2-3 to Atalanta, made the two Milan clubs now officially the top two teams in the Italian Serie A standings.

AC Milan is now the team with the most wins in 16 matches, which is 12 wins. Inter Milan and Napoli who are ranked second and third won 11 wins.

The existence of AC Milan at the top of the Serie A standings puts Stefano Pioli’s team on the right track to win the Scudetto this season.

AC Milan’s journey so far feels similar to the 2003/2004 Serie A, where the Rossoneri at the end of the season actually won the Scudetto. What was the Rossoneri’s journey like at that time?

AC Milan only lost 2 times in 2003/2004
The Scudetto in the 2003/2004 season became the 17th title won by AC Milan in the highest caste competition of Italian football. At that time, the Rossoneri ended a four-year wait to become champions in the Italian Serie A League.

AC Milan in Serie A 2003/2004 was able to go through the first 12 matches without defeat, to be precise with 10 wins and 2 draws.

After that, AC Milan’s 13th giornata match had to be postponed, and in the 14th giornata the Rossoneri had to suffer their first defeat of the season, losing 1-2 to Udinese.

The Rossoneri came back from that loss by winning seven in a row, including the postponed giornata 13 match against Siena. Carlo Ancelotti’s team is also at the top of the standings because it has never been touched by defeat until the 32nd week.

AC Milan in the end only lost twice. In addition to the defeat to Udinese earlier, the Rossoneri also lost 1-2 to Reggina in the giornata 33 Serie A Italian League match.

Closing the season with a 4-2 win over Brescia, AC Milan won Serie A with a total of 82 points. AC Milan is the champion with 25 wins and 7 draws apart from the two losses above.

AC Milan striker, Andriy Shevchenko, managed to become the top scorer of Serie A 2003/2004 with a score of 24 goals, one goal ahead of AS Roma striker, Alberto Gilardino, who was in second place.

AC Milan Can Win the Scudetto This Season?

This season, AC Milan has a good travel record in its first 16 matches. The Rossoneri have won 12 wins so far as well as two draws, with AC Milan playing 1-1 with Juventus and Inter Milan.

However, in contrast to the 2003/2004 season, AC Milan has so far suffered two defeats, to be precise in successive giornata 13 and 14. AC Milan lost 3-4 at home to Fiorentina and 1-3 at home to Sassuolo.

If you compare the statistics of the 2003/2004 season, of course the Rossoneri should not lose again in the remaining 22 matches until the end of the season.

However, there is a difference between the 2003/2004 season and the current one, where at that time Serie A was only followed by 18 teams, not the 20 teams as it is today.

Can AC Milan go through the next 22 matches by continuing to pick up points and not lose again? If able to do so, it is not impossible that the Rossoneri will end their decade-long wait.
