The story of school children always adorns the Korean drama screen every year. Currently airing are School 2021 and Melancholia . Which is more interesting to watch?
School 2021 part of the iconic franchise
After various problems and broadcast delays, the Korean drama franchise School with the title School 2021 finally aired. Like the previous School series series, new faces are shown here.
School has become an iconic Korean schoolgirl drama since KBS produced its first series which aired in 1999. School then continued to School 1 to School 4 in the range of 2000 to 2002. After eleven years of absence, KBS returned to produce School in 2013 starring Lee Jong Suk and Kim Woo Bin.
The new era of the School since this. In the following years, the School continues to present various stories and conflicts of typical schoolchildren. After School 2013 comes School 2015 (Who Are You), then School 2017, and now School 2021.
From year to year the School series has always succeeded in catapulting the names of its players, even though they are considered newcomers. Through this series, names such as Jang Hyuk, Dae Boo Na, Kim Rae Won, Ki Tae Young, Jo In Sung, to Lim Soo Jung skyrocketed in popularity.
Now at School 2021, KBS puts on fresh young faces . Kim Yo Han, who was previously popular on the K-Pop stage as a member of X1 and WEI, was installed as the main character. He was paired with Cho Yi Hyun who was previously known as an intern at Hospital Playlist.
School 2021 is the story of students who attend a Special High School (SMK) and seek their ambition, rather than going to college. It will investigate how these students learn about love, friendship, true passion, and growing up in an intense environment.
Gong Ki Joon (Kim Yo Han), a hardworking student who takes work and school at the same time. He is the one who lost his dream of 11 years as a taekwondo athlete due to an injury and is not sure what to do. Jeong Young Joo (Choo Young Woo), a transfer student who has a hidden story and past relationship with Gong Ki Joon.
Jin Ji Won (Jo Yi Hyun), a confident high school girl with a strong dream, confidently expresses her opinion even though she conflicts with her mother about college. Kang Seo Young (Hwang Bo Reum Byeol), a talented student who is preparing for the college entrance exam. He aims to enter one of the top five universities in Korea.
Lee Kang Hoon (Jeon Seok Ho), a teacher who values work-life balance. He gradually grew up with his students. Lee Jae Hee (Yoon Yi Re), the nephew of the chairman of the board, while Gu Mi Hee (Lee Ji Ha), the twin brother of Lee Jae Hyuk (Lee Sang Joon). He is a quiet person and tries to make a lot of new changes. Unlike Jae Hee, Jae Hyuk is a person who has the support of the foundation.
Korean drama Melancholia on the other hand is not a franchise series. But between Melancholia and School there is a relationship that is both played by Lim Soo Jung. The actress played in the series School 4 (2001) as Oh Hye Ra, one of the students at the school who became the background of the story.
In Melancholia, Lim Soo Jung, who is no longer a teenager, is lined up to play a math teacher. The story presented in the Korean drama directed by Kim Sang Hyub (True Beauty) presents a unique premise from the point of view of a mathematical genius. The genius named Baek Seung Yoo, played by Lee Do Hyun. Lim Soo Jung plays Ji Yoon Su here.
Melancholia tells the story of Baek Seung Yoo ( Lee Do Hyun ), an Asung High School student who is actually a genius in mathematics, At the age of 10 he was recruited into MIT and could solve all kinds of math problems until a traumatic event made him reluctant to work in the field again until he decided to change his name.
Unfortunately for Seung Yoo, he has parents who, like most parents in Korean dramas with high school kids, are ambitious and selfish. They insisted that Baek Seung Yoo walk the path they wanted and use that genius as an asset for the future. The second unfortunate thing, Baek Seung Yoo’s parents had absolutely no desire to at least take their child to undergo therapy for the trauma he experienced.
In the midst of these unfortunate conditions, fate brought Baek Seung Yoo and Ji Yoon Soo (Lim Soo Jung) together. Actually they already “know each other” because they are members of a chat group for mathematicians. But they both don’t know each other’s identity. Through a classic incident of swapping bags on the train as they headed to Seoul, the two of them became acquainted and exchanged phone numbers.
His meeting with Yoon Soo makes Seung Yoo feel no longer have to sink into the sadness and darkness of the trauma he is fighting. Yoon Soo is like a ray of light and hope for his overly depressed life. But the closeness between the teacher and the student makes the relationship between the two so awkward, not even a few people at Asung High School try to bring them down.
