Foreign Language Films Win Oscar 2022 Nominations

Previously, this 90-minute film has received various prestigious awards and received praise from film critics. One of them is at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival, the film was the second runner up for the People’s Choice Award for Documentaries .

The Worst Person in the World
The Worst Person in the World or in Norwegian Verdens Verste Menneske is a 2021 dark romantic comedy film directed by Joachim Trier. This film is the last in the ” Oslo Trilogy ” starring Renate Reinsve and Anders Danielsen.

The synopsis tells the story of a love story between a psychology student who decides to become a photographer, and a famous comic artist who is fifteen years older than him. Although the two of them are quite far apart in age, they are very suitable in starting a relationship together.

The film successfully received positive reviews from Rotten Tomatoes with a rating of 97 percent with an average rating of 8.6/10. Additionally, The Worst Person in the World won the New York Film Critics Circle award in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom
Premiered at the 2019 BFI London Film Festival, who would have thought that Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom was disqualified at the 93rd Academy Awards. However, this Bhutanese film was re-elected and became one of five Oscar nominations in February 2022.

The film, directed by Pawo Choyning Dorji, tells the story of a character named Ugyen, a school teacher in his last year of training who is sent to the remote town of Lunana in Northern Bhutan. There he must brave the highlands, the lack of public facilities, and the extreme winter.

Before it was ready to compete for the Oscars, the 109-minute film won the Audience Choice Award for Best Feature Film at the 2020 Palm Springs International Film Festival .

Drive My Car
Drive My Car is a 2021 Japanese drama film written and directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi. The film is based on Haruki Murakami’s short story of the same name. The film with the original title Doraibu mai kā follows the character Yūsuke Kafuku (Hidetoshi Nishijima), an actor and theater director who suddenly loses his wife.

One day, he received an offer to direct a theatrical production called Uncle Vanya in Hiroshima. Because he is still grieving and in order to avoid unwanted events, Kafuku is given a rental driver by the theater manager, named Misaki Watari (Toko Miura). Kafuku and Watari’s journey to Hiroshima turned into a special story.

Drive My Car received four nominations at the 2022 Oscars, namely Best Picture , Best Director for Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Best International Feature Film , and Best Adapted Screenplay. In addition, the film set a new record as the first Japanese film to be nominated for the Best Picture category .
