Review the past of Credence, the most important character in the Fantastic Beasts franchise: The Secrets of Dumbledore. here

After two movies that excited Harry Potter fans around the world, the Fantastic Beasts franchise will return in 2022 with the title Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore ) . Through the trailers that have been released, the audience still has the most headache with the story of the character Credence Barebone (played by Ezra Miller), especially about his identity. Is Credence really Dumbledore’s biological brother?

Tragedy childhood: Being swapped, abused by adoptive mother

Credence was born in 1901, carrying the prestigious blood of the Dumbledore family. According to Grindelwald, his original name was Arelius Dumbledore, while the name Credence was given after he was adopted. But on the train to America with her aunt, baby Credence was unfortunately swapped with Corvus – Leta Lestrange’s younger brother. Then a big storm hit, sinking the ship carrying the characters. Credence (now Corvus and following Lestrange) survived while the real Corvus and Credence’s aunt died. Other than Leta Lestrange, no one knows who Corvus really is.

At the age of 4, Credence was adopted by Mary Lou Barebone, at this time, he was officially named Credence Barebone. However, as an “anti-witch” person, Mary repeatedly abused Credence physically and mentally, gradually turning him into an Obscurial. Only when Tina Goldstein appeared, Credence was officially freed from her nightmare mother.

Meet the villain Grindelwald

Gellert Grindelwald sought to approach Credence Barebone in order to find a child less than 10 years old (an Obscurial) but possessing a superior ability. He disguises himself as Percival Graves – Security Director of MACUSA (American Magical Council) and promises to teach Credence magic, as well as free him if he helps him find an Obscurial on the run somewhere in New York.

However, after finding out that the child was Credence’s adopted sister, Modesty, Grindelwald broke his promise and sent him away, as well as calling him Squib – just the child of witch parents but without magic. Credence became enraged and unleashed the Obscurus to wreak havoc across New York, much to Grindelwald’s surprise.

Death and Resurrection

After a fight with the main characters in part 1 of Fantastic Beasts , Credence is said to have been completely annihilated. However, Newt Scamander is the only one who knows that Credence is not dead, as an Obscurial cannot die while in Obscurus form.

Credence leaves and befriends Nagini, and sets out to find his true identity. At that time he met Grindelwald again – who silently tried to stop Credence’s efforts and wanted him to join his side to fight Albus Dumbledore.

It is worth mentioning that, if Grindelwald’s words are true, Albus and Credence (or Alerius) are actually brothers. Not long after joining Grindelwald’s guild, Credence had his first encounter with Albus in Berlin, but was unable to destroy the future headmaster of Hogwarts. On the other hand, Grindelwald’s words are still not 100% true, meaning that Credence may still be of Dumbledore’s lineage (due to his connection with the phoenix) but not from the same parents as Albus, or worse, he doesn’t either. Whether or not Credence’s true identity will be revealed, the answer will be when Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets comes out this April .
