Manchester United is one of the most popular clubs in the world. This club is a dream for many top players to play for. Throughout its history, the Red Devils have given birth to many stars, which come and go. Eric Cantona, Ruud van Nistelrooy, David Beckham to Cristiano Ronaldo are the names that shine the most at Old Trafford.
Several names have decided to hang up their boots as a football player. However, there are several former Manchester United players, who are not widely known by fans at this time are still actively playing. Anyone? This is the review.
1. Federico Macheda
Federico Macheda had become a name that was predicted as a potential star for the Red Devils. He scored a remarkable debut goal in the decisive victory for Manchester United over Aston Villa in April 2009 at the age of just 17 years. In order to get more playing time, Macheda was loaned to another club.
He ignored Fergusson’s suggestion to be loaned to an English club, and preferred to join Sampdoria. It became the point of decline in the player’s career. After that he played for QPR, Stuttgart, Doncaster, Birmingham, Cardiff, Nottingham Forest and Novara. But there are no prominent developments in his career. Now the 30-year-old striker has defended Panathinaikos since 2018.
After becoming one of the mainstays at Manchester United due to his consistent performances, Rafael was sold to Lyon by Louis van Gaal in 2015. He played for the Red Devils for 7 years with a total of 170 appearances and won 3 Premier League titles. The Brazilian defender lived in France for 5 years before having a season in Istanbul Basaksehir.
The 31-year-old defender returned to his native Brazil this summer to play for Botafogo, where legends like Garrincha, Didi and Nilton Santos are legends.
3. Roy Carroll
Best known for his role in Pedro Mendes’ ‘ghost goal’ in 2005, Carroll’s last game for the club was the FA Cup final loss to Arsenal that same year. He costumed MU in the period 2001-2005.
After returning from a knee injury, Carroll returned to the Irish League to join Dungannon Swifts in January 2021.
4. Gabriel Obert
Gabriel Obertan is considered one of Sir Alex Fergusson’s failed transfers. He was signed in 2009 from Bordeaux as a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo who left for Real Madrid. Obertan only lasted two seasons with 27 appearances before being released to Newcastle United. He defended the Magpies for five seasons, and then moved between clubs, Anzhi, Wigan and Levski Sofia.
After leaving Turkish side Erzurumspor this summer, the 32-year-old now plays for US side Charlotte Independence who play in the second division of the USL Championship.
5. Carlos Tevez
Carlos Teves is one of the best strikers Argentina has ever had. He had defended Manchester United for two seasons in the 2007-2009 period as a loan player from West Ham. During that time he managed to score 34 goals from 99 matches in all competitions, and presented 2 Premier League titles.
He was then released by West Ham to Man City in 2009, before joining Juventus, and returned home to join Boca Juniors in 2015. At his boyhood club Tevez won two league titles and scored 31 goals over three seasons. The 37-year-old striker recently announced he has left the club, and has no intention of hanging up his boots. At the moment the player is united without a club.
Those are five former Manchester United players who are still actively playing today. Some names are getting old, but haven’t lost their passion to keep playing. Others have enjoyed quiet careers with less popular clubs.
