Why does everyone hate that Chris Pratt is Super Mario in an animated film?

Chris Pratt’s choice of Super Mario in the film over Charles Martinet has drawn the ire of fans, but why does everyone hate Chris Pratt? We try to explain it:

The Nintendo Live from Thursday night through Friday delivered plenty of hits, including the triumphant return from Bayonetta 3, nearly four years after its announcement, or the arrival of the Nintendo 64 and Mega Drive games on the Switch.

But even that took a backseat when Miyamoto himself came out of wherever he’s been for the past five years to announce the date and cast of the animated Super Mario film.

Great surprise when it was announced that Chris Pratt will be the actor who will voice Super Mario in the film. Fans gave no praise, and after cheers and nervous laughter, the first memes began to appear.

In general, Super Mario fans weren’t too happy, to put it mildly, with Chris Pratt’s casting as Mario. What is the reason?

From a marketing point of view, Pratt’s choice was clear (a priori). The actor, who started out as a supporting star in Parks and Recreation, starred in two major franchises such as Jurassic World and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Because of this, the studio continued to fight over him, hoping to take advantage of his presence. However, the uneven results of films like Passengers or The War of Tomorrow are starting to show the layers the star system should have. In other words: actors are less important than the franchise (Jurassic Park or Marvel).

In fact, the effect ended up being counterproductive: the insistence on making Pratt a star left most of the public bored with him outside of the established franchise (and even there he didn’t escape controversy). Do you remember 2014 or 2015, when he kept saying that Pratt had to be the new Indiana Jones?

This very witty tweet (dating from 2020) aptly sums up the problem many people have with Chris Pratt: he’s the first name that comes to mind when you think of the popular actor the studio wants to push with conviction. against the choice, in principle, more logical.

That choice, of course, is Charles Martinet, the voice actor who has voiced Mario in every game since 1996, the first of which people regret not being cast, relegated to a “surprise cameo” in the film.

In this regard, it should also be taken into account that Martinet, and unlike Pratt, has no experience as a dubbing actor in leading roles in cinema .

Would Martinet be able or even willing to play Mario in an environment very different from the environment he was used to, and in which he had developed his entire career?

Since we don’t know all the possible technical or creative factors behind the decision that Martinet isn’t Mario, blaming Pratt or the producers is risky and irresponsible.

Chris Pratt doesn’t like it
No, behind this commotion there are many factors, but Martinet’s replacement is second. The problem is Pratt. Would it cause so much outrage if Danny De Vito was chosen to play Mario?

Aside from Pratt’s (albeit relative) over-exploitation as a package for a star system, Pratt’s other big problem is that it doesn’t go down well.

His ties to a church accused of having anti-LGBTQ positions, that he married Katherine Schwarzenegger (daughter) or the fact that he did not participate with most of his Marvel colleagues at an event to support their candidate Joe Biden imply that Pratt has conservative ideologies, though. he never made it explicit.
