Masterpiece in the modern era, Frozen is the highest grossing animation of all time reaching 1.2 billion USD (before the 2019 version of The Lion King was ranked first). For the story, Disney took the inspiration for the Frozen story from Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale “the Snow Queen” which was published in 1845. With strong characters and a “catchy” soundtrack, Disney managed to make the Frozen story liked by many people so that it became a hit and the most talked about at that time. Six years later, Disney released its sequel, Frozen 2, which of course was welcomed. In the sequel this time all parties involved in the first film returned such as directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, producer Peter Del Vecho, songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, and composer Christophe Beck. Likewise the voice cast in the first film Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff, Josh Gad, Santino Fontana, Ciarán Hinds, and Alan Tudyk who returned to voice their characters. This time they are supported by the new voice cast of Sterling K. Brown, Evan Rachel Wood, Alfred Molina, Martha Plimpton, Jason Ritter, Rachel Matthews, and Jeremy Sisto. Frozen 2 was released by Walt Disney Pictures in the US on November 22, 2019 and screened in USA cinemas on November 20, 2019.

The story in Frozen 2 takes place 3 years later from the events in the first film, Elsa and Anna live in peace with all the people of Arendelle. Kristoff, Sven, and Olaf had also been living with them in Arendelle. One night Elsa hears a mysterious voice from the north calling her and is determined to investigate. This is because he remembered the childhood story of his father and mother which said that there was a mysterious forest where the people of Northuldra lived but access to the forest had been blocked by a magical mist. Along with the mysterious voice, the spirits of the four elements also woke up, they then went to Pabbie (Ciarán Hinds) the leader of the Rock Trolls to find answers. Pabbie says they must go to the forest and seek answers there related to their past as well as to bring balance back to the four elemental spirits (water, fire, wind, and earth/earth). Anna, who didn’t want to let Elsa look for answers herself because she was worried about her, accompanied Elsa along with Kristoff, Sen, and Olaf. Will they be able to find answers to the mysteries of their past and what exactly awaits them in the mysterious forest?
Frozen 2 is a satisfying sequel and provides a good conclusion to what was left unanswered in the first film. In terms of the story, it is really developed more broadly although it still focuses on the relationship between Elsa and Anna. In Frozen 2, the audience will find out why Elsa has magical powers while Anna doesn’t, the background of Elsa-Anna’s parents, which this time is explored more, and the mystery that Elsa-Anna must uncover regarding the existence of a mysterious forest. These three aspects can be mixed into an interesting and not boring story. The story narration is easy to follow considering that this is a film that targets children even though the theme presented this time is more complex. Meanwhile, the story is also enriched by the subplot of Kristoff who struggles to propose to Anna which gives an interesting dynamic to the overall story. The light comedy nuance is also present throughout the film thanks to the presence of Olaf (Josh Gad) who brings a fresh and not too dark atmosphere in this film. The mystery in Frozen 2 as already presented in the trailer is the most interesting part in the film that I can’t reveal because it will spoil the fun of this film.
All the actors and actresses involved as the voice cast display emotions and character ensembles that are very good throughout the film. Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell have succeeded in bringing Elsa and Anna to life as sisters who have a strong bond, who are always there to support each other when one of them is in trouble. Elsa who is sometimes stubborn but has great concern for the people around her who she loves and Anna who is charismatic and always supports Elsa and becomes a moral compass for Elsa are things that are clearly emphasized in the film. Olaf’s behavior as a lovable character and steals attention because of his comical but innocent behavior, Kristoff who is brave but nervous when faced with Anna and Sven the reindeer as Kristoff’s reliable sidekick, all three are able to balance the serious tone and support the story of this film. The presence of new characters played by Sterling K. Brown, Jason Ritter, and others also adds to the splendor of this film. Meanwhile, in terms of visuals and animation, a gap of six years has had a very noticeable impact on the changes. The autumn atmosphere includes the kingdom of Arendelle, the mysterious forest animation with beautiful neon and pastel colors, to the details on the faces of Elsa, Anna, and Kristoff even on Elsa’s hair which looks amazing. Not only that, Elsa’s action scenes this time look more exciting and colorful than the first film and really explore her ability to manipulate water and ice. The clothes/dresses used by Anna and especially Elsa look amazing and very beautiful, especially when Elsa transforms after knowing the truth about her true identity.
One of the success factors of Frozen is the song that invades the audience’s mind, the sensational song Let it Go sticks in the audience’s mind like the sweet taste of sugar. The soundtrack for this sequel doesn’t seem to be able to achieve the same success as in the first film but Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Robert Lopez and Christopher Beck’s scoring are able to integrate every song and music very well into the narrative of the story. Into The Unknown, which is sung by Idina Menzel, will bring its own feel of warmth when watching this film. Josh Gad/Olaf’s song When I Am Older is also interesting and gives us a reflection on our attitude towards change and maturity.
Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee succeeded in carrying out their duties in continuing this phenomenal animated musical story. If in the first film, Anna and Elsa solved their respective problems separately, in this film they are always together and must work together to deal with conflicts and mysteries that arise. The common thread that became the focus of the first and second films is never lost and is always written in the film, namely about the deep and strong brotherly relationship between Elsa and Anna. The issue of dealing with the past and doing the right thing are two of the main themes that are well explored in the story. Through this second film,
