Reviews Film Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)

The film, which won the Oscar for the best film category, is indeed a film that is quite unique. The title is Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), which is quite a long title for a film. In terms of cast and crew, this film is indeed very weighty. The director is Alejandro González Iñárritu, a Mexican director who is well-known for producing quality films. The actors are also qualified, call it Michael Keaton, Emma Stone, Edward Norton, Naomi Watts. Of all the names above, it is only natural that this film managed to get the best film award at the Oscars.

The plot of Birdman is actually quite simple. It tells the story of a veteran actor who once successfully starred in the superhero film Birdman, who is now almost bankrupt, Riggan (Michael Keaton), who wants to start his career again by producing a play on Broadway adapted from a short story entitled “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love”. He also acts as a screenwriter, director and actor of this play . The film also revolves around the twists and turns of his struggle, the conflicts he must face, and pressure from the media, until the D day of the performance which becomes the climax of the story.

As a film that tells the story of drama performances, this film is full of nuances of the world of performance, be it acting, role selection, dress rehearsals, and so on. Audiences who like things like this will most likely fall in love with this film. But the most impressive is the camera effects and editing used by this film. The camera movement and editing process is so smooth that it gives the impression that it is entirely a long single shot . This is Iñárritu’s vision, which wants to present a realistic impression, or what he calls ‘ inescapable reality’experienced by the character Riggan, and wants to bring the audience immersed in that reality. Realism is indeed a key thing in this film, especially we can find it at the climax of the film.

With an emphasis on theatrical aspects, the actors’ acting is very strong. They all look total and charming. But Film Reviews gave its own note on Michael Keaton. This actor managed to bring the appearance that is arguably the best in his career.

In addition, this film is also able to make us think, especially with the ambiguity shown at the end of the story. However, Birdman is different from Iñárritu’s previous films which tend to be dark. In the end, there is a positive side that we can interpret from this film.
