Movie Review Solo A Star Wars Story

Initially, Lucasfilm appointed the director duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller to direct the spin-off film Han Solo. So far, they are both known as producers of animated films and comedies. Some of Lord-Miller’s works, which were quite successful, include: Cloudy with A Chance of Meatballs (2009), 21 Jump Street (2011), 22 Jump Street (2014), and The Lego Movie (2014).

The production process for the film, which was finally titled Solo: A Star Wars Story, then began in February 2017. In London. However, while filming was in progress, suddenly, Lucasfilm kicked out the director duo Lord-Miller in June 2017. Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy cited differences in vision as the reason.

Much to Lord-Miller’s dismay, it is reported that Lucasfilm’s dismissal happened without warning. Maybe, suck it like I felt before. When you decide I’m right again, unfortunately.

Reportedly, the reason behind Lucasfilm’s dismissal was a mismatch between the screenwriter duo, father and son, Lawrence and Jonathan Kasdan, with the director duo Lord-Miller. Kasdan itself is a type of filmmaker who is known to be very strict. What appears in the film must be in accordance with the script he wrote. No improvisation.

According to a Lucasfilm source, Lawrence Kasdan’s rigidity is in stark contrast to Lord-Miller’s. The duet director is known to like to improvise. They are fans of jokes and all things spontaneous.

Kathleen Kennedy, as the leader of Lucasfilm, reportedly, is more inclined to Lawrence Kasdan. The original is a person who is firm and rude, but not humorous. Kennedy felt he and Kasdan knew more about Han Solo’s character than Lord-Miller.

The friction, reportedly, had split the shooting location of Solo: A Star Wars Story into two camps. There are those who support Lord-Miller, but there are also those who are pro Lawrence Kasdan. Not wanting the teamwork and chemistry that had been built between the cast and crew of the film to fall apart, finally, Kathleen Kennedy took decisive steps: Firing Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

After the sacking of Lord-Miller, at first, it was Lawrence Kasdan himself who was tipped as a replacement director. He will concurrently serve as director and screenwriter for Solo: A Star Wars Story. The father of Jon Kasdan is indeed very experienced. He wrote the scripts for Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Return of the Jedi (1983), and The Force Awakens (2015). In which the three films all feature the character of Han Solo.

However, for whatever reason, in the end, the one chosen as Lord-Miller’s successor was the Oscar-winning director: Ron Howard. Who is a friend of Star Wars creator George Lucas. Who has experience producing famous films. A Kind of Apollo 13 (1995), A Beautiful Mind (2001), Cinderella Man (2005), The Da Vinci Code (2006), Frost/Nixon (2008), Angels & Demons (2009), Rush (2013), In the Heart of the Sea (2015), and Inferno (2016).

However, even so, despite the controversial selection, in the end, Star Wars fans should appreciate Ron Howard’s performance. The Lord-Miller successor is very serious about pursuing the release schedule of Solo: A Star Wars Story.
