Beyond Evil (formerly titled Monster) is a psychological thriller film starring Yeo Jin Goo and Shin Ha Kyun. In this drama, Yeo Jin Goo and Shin Ha Kyun will break the rules and laws in pursuit of a serial killer.
Yeo Jin Goo will play the character of Han Joo Won, a highly skilled detective. Han Joo Won was transferred to the branch of the police station in Manyang village. In Manyang, Han Jo Won will meet former detective Lee Dong Shik (Shin Ha Kyun), who is very mysterious.
Unpredictably, many detectives suspect that Lee Dong Shik is the serial killer. But many things show that it’s not him, who is where this serial murder case is still so ambiguous and so complicated.
On the first day Han Joo Won was transferred to Manyang, his expressions and actions were very cautious towards new people. He sometimes ignores other people, even when Han Joo Won’s acquaintances are not friendly.
While serving in Manyang, Han Joo Won will work closely with Lee Dong Shik. But unfortunately, Han Joo Won and Lee Dong Shik are not very close.
Lee Dong Shik (Shin Ha Kyun) and Han Joo Won (Yeo Jin Goo) begin an investigation, while hiding their true motives. Their investigation uncovers the hidden past of the residents of Manyang and uncovers a human skeleton, which is linked to events that occurred 20 years earlier.
Their task is to find out who the mastermind or serial killer is, 20 years ago.
In the midst of carrying out the investigation process, it turned out that Han Joo Won had carried out an investigation first with the other investigative team. The person Han Joo Won is targeting is Lee Dong Shik. It refers to Lee Dong Shik because the last person to contact the victim was Lee Dong Shik. In addition, while completing the investigation task, the other detectives felt that there were many irregularities.
The episode ends, with Han Joo Won and Lee Dong Shik finding another skeletonized corpse. At that time, Han Joo Won asked Lee Dong Shik a question, “do you know him?
In two episodes, the story of the drama Beyond Evil features a backward storyline. The plot twist is very confusing, when we don’t focus on all the changes that arise. Moreover, when Lee Dong Shik was still in his 20s, where the murder case took place. (I don’t know, I think Lee Dong Shik was the one who killed the woman who was thrown into the bushes).
The statement came when in 20 minutes of episode 1, it showed Lee Dong Shik arguing with a female victim in a cafe. Still in an emotional state, Lee Dong Shik left the cafe saying “see you again,” to the woman. That night he died, and the next morning there were 10 pieces of fingers lying in front of a resident’s house. (Scary, crazy!)
Although the drama is full of mysteries, for some reason watching this serial killer search, feels very boring. Eits, this is because Beyond Evil drama is very heavy and invites us to think hard. So it’s recommended to go for a marathon, meaning wait for this drama to finish before watching it.
Beyond Evil (2021) Review
Although the theme of a psychopath, but this drama is very heartwarming. Watching this reminds us of childhood friendships. Seeing the closeness of each character, strengthening each other, and trusting. The suspense scene is presented very well, the idea of murder and the madness of a psychopath and power is also very well packaged. The point that is also quite interesting is the scoring of the music for each scene which is different from the usual psychopathic dramas. As for acting, without a doubt, everything was perfect!
I feel like this drama is the beginning of JTBC’s revival after it’s been a bit sluggish. With the increase in ratings, they finally ended up with a rating that broke their own record of 6.6%. I really hope I can win a lot of awards at the 57th Baeksang Awards 2021, right!
