Doctor Strange 2 poster undergoes changes in Italy due to controversy

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is the latest MCU project that is ready to be released in early May 2022. The film, directed by Sam Raimi, has also released the latest trailer and poster as a form of promotion some time ago. However, the Italian version of the film’s poster underwent a change because one aspect of the poster was considered controversial in the country’s culture.

Launching The Direct, you can see this change in Doctor Strange’s hand gestures in the movie poster. In the regular version found on posters in various countries, Strange’s hand forms a gesture like a “metal” symbol with his index and pinky fingers raised. However, in the Italian version of the poster, Strange forms a hand gesture by lifting only the index and middle fingers.

Reportedly, the gestures on the regular version of the poster are considered offensive to Italian culture. This is because it is a gesture used to quip a cuckold, or a man who has an unfaithful wife. However, the changes to this poster will reportedly have no effect on the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in Italy in May 2022.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness isn’t actually the first film to have to make a “special” poster for a particular country. Previously, there were also several Hollywood films whose posters were considered controversial by certain countries and had to be changed. This usually happens because the poster has elements of vulgarity, brutality, offensiveness, or is inappropriate for the culture of a particular country.
