Brazil vs Argentina national team match in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers in the CONMEBOL zone only lasted six minutes. The duel had to be stopped due to violating the Brazilian government’s health protocol.
Brazil hosted Argentina at the Neo Quimica Arena, Monday (6/9/2021) early morning WIB. Competing tightly to occupy the top of the CONMEBOL 2022 World Cup qualifying standings, both teams performed with their best squads.
However, when the duel had only been running for six minutes, there was a commotion on the sidelines. Brazil’s National Health Administration (ANVISA) and the authorities intervened in the match.
The reason is four Argentine players, who come from Premier League clubs, participating in the match. The four Argentine national team players are Giovani Lo Celso, Cristian Romero, Emiliano Buendia, and Emiliano Martinez.
The names are suspected of violating health protocols, for providing false information when filling out forms for foreigners entering Brazil.
According to the Brazilian government’s health regulations, arrivals from the UK, South Africa, Northern Ireland, and India must undergo 14 days of self-quarantine before starting any activity.
The four Argentine national team players departed from England and had only been in Brazil for three days to undergo a qualifying match for the 2022 World Cup.
ANVISA President’s Statement
The President of ANVISA, Barra Torres, regretted the attitude of Giovani Lo Celso, Cristian Romero, Emiliano Buendia, and Emiliano Martinez who gave false information when filling out the arrival form. Not only that, but the four also did not comply with the health protocols implemented by the Brazilian government.
“What happened? These players, after arriving on the territory of Brazil, submitted a document that was a declaration of the health of the traveler. In the document it was stated that they did not go through three countries, namely England, South Africa, and India,” Torres said.
What happens is that after verification through passports, the players pass through England,” he continued.

As reported by Marca, CONMEBOL allowed the four players to travel to Brazil and not have to undergo self-quarantine for 14 days.
CONMEBOL considers Lo Celso, Romero, Buendia, and Martinez to be in the Argentine national team bubble, and have no other interactions outside the squad.
However, Brazilian authorities argue that national laws are above CONMEBOL regulations. As a result, the four were required to undergo self-quarantine for 14 days or be deported to the country where they departed, namely the UK.
Argentina national team players headed to the locker room and refused to play without the presence of four of their teammates. On the other hand, the Brazilian national team remained on the pitch and underwent training led by Neymar.
After being suspended for 60 minutes, CONMEBOL finally decided to postpone the match. The match cannot be continued until an undetermined time.
“Based on the referee’s decision, the match managed by FIFA between Brazil and Argentina for the World Cup Qualification has been adjourned,” a CONMEBOL statement read.
This procedure is under applicable regulations.”
“World Cup qualification is a FIFA competition. Any decisions regarding its organization and development are the exclusive right of that institution.”
