Chelsea’s New Players Report: Only Lukaku Shines

Chelsea did not make many new signings in the transfer market last summer. Understandably, part of their spending budget is focused on one player only.

After all, overall, the Chelsea squad only lacks quality in one sector, namely the front line. And in that situation, the Blues were able to come out as champions in the Champions League last season.

The club’s management is focused on recruiting quality strikers and is ready to spend big on it. The search ended in the name of Romelu Lukaku, who signed from Inter Milan for 115 million euros.

Apart from Lukaku, Chelsea also signed Saul Niguez and Marcus Bettinelli. How are they doing so far? Here’s a review from .

Romelu Lukaku – 7
Lukaku really raised the level of Chelsea’s front line one level to the better. It’s clear their other forwards like Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham, who have already moved to AS Roma, can’t compete with him on goalscoring terms.

The Belgian player immediately scored in his debut match against one of the ‘big six’ clubs, Arsenal. So far, Lukaku has scored three goals in all competitions.

Lukaku has not scored in the last five appearances. But his ability to be a bouncing board up front is still very much needed, so Thomas Tuchel is not willing to leave him on the bench.

Saul Niguez – 5
Saul failed to make a positive impression when he got his debut opportunity when Chelsea faced Aston Villa. Appearing as a starter, the Spanish midfielder only played until the first half break.

Tuchel gave him the opportunity to play again in the match against Aston Villa, 11 days after the previous game, in the Carabao Cup. He lasted long enough on the field, until the 76th minute. After that, Saul no longer showed the bridge of his nose.

Chelsea’s midfield is home to many great players such as Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante. So, it’s no wonder that Saul is rarely played when he fails to make a convincing impression on his debut match.

Marcus Bettinelli – Not Shown yet
Signed from Fulham, Bettinelli is certainly aware that he will not be the first choice to guard the Chelsea goal line. Because he had to compete with two other goalkeepers.

Edouard Mendy, with his fine form last season, will certainly not be displaced unless he suffers an injury. When that happens, Tuchel will certainly choose Kepa Arrizabalaga whose form has started to improve in recent matches.

The presence of Mendy and Kepa has confirmed the position of the 29-year-old at Stamford Bridge: the third goalkeeper. Only a miracle can give him the opportunity to appear regularly this season.

Trevoh Chalobah – 7
Chalobah can be called a new player at Chelsea even though he doesn’t come from another club. Yes, Tuchel gave a promotion from the club’s academy for the 22-year-old man.

Last summer, Chelsea were busy looking for a new defender. They had tried to recruit Jules Kunde from Sevilla. But his efforts did not bear fruit until the summer transfer window closed.

Since Kurt Zouma has been released, Chelsea can’t help but have to put their trust in Chalobah. Their belief paid off completely, because Chalobah’s performances so far have been very promising.
