Canceled 2 Tarantino Marvel Movies!

News, Entertaiment

Quentin Jerome Tarantino is a director, producer, and scriptwriter who often produces quality movies. One of his most popular works is Pulp Fiction (1994), Kill Bill: Volume 1 and Volume 2 (2003 & 2004), Inglourious Basterds (2009), to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019). In each of his movies, Tarantino is famous for presenting black comedy stories with quite sadistic violent content, and also exploring the morals of each character. Almost all of his feature movies were successful, both in terms of reviews and box office income.

Despite the success of his highly eccentric movies, Tarantino is a fan of superhero comic books, and had plans to make movies about Marvel heroes. However, this plan failed to materialize. We also wonder why he canceled the Marvel movie project. What are the movies?

Movie Luke Cage
As a teenager, Quentin Tarantino collected a number of comics, and one of his favorite readings came from Marvel with his favorite titles being Shang-Chi, and Hero for Hire: Luke Cage. At the beginning of his career in the world of cinema, Marvel had to go bankrupt, and they also sold some of the rights to all of their comic characters to several movie companies. During those moments, Tarantino then met Ed Pressman, a producer who owns the movie rights to Luke Cage who has also adapted the comic The Crow, and Judge Dredd into his movie.

Pressman then liked the idea of making a movie based on Marvel’s first black hero. In the original plan, Tarantino would choose actor Laurence Fishburne to play the character Luke Cage. However, his friends who are also “comic enthusiasts” opposed his proposal for making Fishburne the main character. They believed that Wesley Snipes was a much better suited actor for the role.

Tarantino was unable to make a decision regarding the appropriate actor to play Luke Cage. He then gave up, and had a heavy heart to cancel the movie adaptation project, and shifted his focus to making Pulp Fiction movies. For two decades, the Luke Cage movie project has been at a stalemate until it has finally been adapted into a series on the Netflix streaming service.

Movie Silver Surfer
After the success of his directorial debut in Reservoir Dogs, Tarantino also has a great opportunity to make his first superhero movie that focuses on the Silver Surfer character. He then wrote a 500-page script that would be addressed to German studio Constantin movie, which at the time owned the rights to the Fantastic Four and all of its characters.

Initially, the studio was very interested in the story idea in Tarantino’s script. However, they instead decided to work with a producer named Roger Corman to make the Fantastic Four movie (1994), which unfortunately had to end with bad results, and also disappointing.

Despite the interesting script idea, the studio is still not impressed with Tarantino’s debut in the movie world. Another reason, CGI technology at that time was not modern, and sophisticated now, therefore making Silver Surfer never materialized because the visual effects would be very expensive.

Will Quentin Tarantino Make a Marvel Movie?
Quentin Tarantino may still dream of working on a movie adaptation of Marvel comics one day. His wish seems to be possible, especially since the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is currently expanding, and its journey has not stopped for years to come. Kevin Feige, as the President of Marvel Studios, of course, has prepared the names of suitable directors to work on a number of MCU movie projects in the future.

It could be that Tarantino’s name is on his list of choices, especially now that another great director, Sam Raimi, is also involved in the MCU by working on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. If Tarantino is still interested in adapting Marvel comic characters, the MCU could be the best bridge to make the first superhero movie in his career.
