Big Transfers That Failed to Realize in 2021

Sports

The transfer market is the right time for a club to improve its squad by bringing in a number of new players. However, there are times when an agreement that is so close is canceled due to a number of factors. In the summer of this year, there were several transfers that failed to materialize.

Uniquely, the transfer that failed to materialize involved big names in European competition. So, who are the top players who failed to change clubs in the summer of 2021? Here’s the review!

1. Kieran Trippier to Manchester United
After finishing in second place last season, Manchester United are optimistic that they can win the title this season by bringing in a number of star players. One position that the Red Devils want to strengthen is right wing back. Kieran Trippier’s name then emerged as an ideal target because it was considered to fit the team’s strategy.

Trippier has more expertise in executing set pieces. This is certainly very useful when the team gets a corner kick. Unfortunately, the very high price made Manchester United chose to withdraw to bring in the player. Atletico Madrid reportedly set a price of 60 million euros or the equivalent of Rp. 1 trillion to its flagship player.

2. Granite Xhaka to AS Roma
While still focusing on defending the Swiss national team at the 2020 European Cup, Granit Xhaka has reportedly been in communication with AS Roma. In fact, the player is reportedly very willing to join the Italian club. He has been given assurances by Jose Mourinho to become a regular in the first team.

Mourinho was eyeing Xhaka as the midfielder could also play at left-back and AS Roma had just lost Leonardo Spinazzola to injury. However, in the end, Xhaka actually stayed at Arsenal this season. The decision is inseparable from the role of Mikel Arteta who continues to convince Xhaka to stay at the Emirates Stadium.

3. Jules Kunde to Chelsea
Despite winning the Champions League competition, Thomas Tuchel still emphasized that Chelsea will buy big players in the summer of 2021. Apart from bringing in Romelu Lukaku, Chelsea actually also wants to recruit a new centre-back. Jules Kunde’s name was also linked with the club based at Stamford Bridge.

The French defender is projected to be the successor to Thiago Silva and Cesar Azpilicueta who are no longer young. However, Sevilla set a very high price for the 22-year-old defender. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Kounde’s release clause stands at 80 million euros. Having spent a lot of money on Lukaku, Chelsea finally decided to withdraw from the hunt for Kunde this summer.

4. Harry Kane to Manchester City
At the end of last season’s competition, Harry Kane had reportedly asked Tottenham Hotspur to sell him to another club. The reason is, he wants to feel new challenges and of course win a title that he has never gotten throughout his professional career. Hearing the news, Manchester City immediately moved quickly in order to secure the services of the player.

However, the transfer agreement failed to materialize because Spurs did not want to let go of their flagship striker. In fact, Manchester City has submitted an offer worth 150 million euros, equivalent to Rp. 2.5 trillion.

5. Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid
Kylian Mbappe almost became the most expensive transfer this summer if he moved to Real Madrid. Los Blancos are reportedly willing to spend big to be able to bring in the French player. In fact, Real Madrid have made three different offers to PSG.

However, all the offers were rejected by Paris Saint-Germain. As a result, until the transfer window closes, Mbappe continues to play in the French highest caste. Real Madrid have the opportunity to sign Mbappe for free next summer as his contract expires at PSG in 2022.
