The National Political Council (CPN) of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) voted and resolved that Alejandro alito Moreno Cárdenas and Carolina Viggiano Austria continue leading the tricolor until after the electoral process of 2024.
In accordance with what was approved on the afternoon of May 8, the current leaders will continue to direct the tricolor until September 2024that is, days or weeks before President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) leaves the ownership of the Local Executive on October 1.
It should be remembered that the aforementioned characters had to leave their position next August; However, the request for extension of the mandate would respond to not interfering with internal elections with the national elections of the following year.
The reform that allowed Alito Moreno not to abandon the party took place on December 19 at another meeting of the CPN, in which eight articles were reformed, among which 83 stood out. Although various challenges were filed before the National Electoral Institute (INE) and it invalidated them; however, the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary (TEPJF) did accept the changes last April.
Before the event began, it was announced that the former presidents of the tricolor Sweet Maria Sauri and Claudia Ruiz Massieu They had confirmed that their participation in the event, in addition to having asked to speak against the extension of the mandate of the president and general secretary.
The first to speak was Sauri, who asked the militancy to vote against the mandate extension “Without fear of losing imagined candidacies”, since he recalled that the PRI is not being punished internally, but is being punished by the citizenry in the electoral processes.
“Let’s fulfill our historical commitment, compañeras and compañeros advisers, let’s vote against the extension, let’s vote for the method for the election of the new national leadership. Let’s do it without fear of losing imagined candidacies because, What good will it be to win them if the citizens punish our democratic laziness at the polls?”, he expressed.
For his part, the coordinator of the deputies of the tricolor, Ruben Moreira Valdez, ruled that the extension of time does not affect any right of militancy nor does it deviate from what is established in the statutes that govern the party, in addition to the fact that the extension has a specific temporality and responds to working professionally in the 2024 elections.
