The biopic is based on the docufiction novel of the same name by five-time Pulitzer Prize finalist Joyce Carol Oates , which tells about the underside of Marilyn Monroe ‘s fame : a difficult childhood, unsuccessful marriages and an oppressive image of a frivolous blonde. Ana de Armas did not get the role right away: first Monroe was supposed to be played by Naomi Watts , and then by Jessica Chastain .

Not much is known about the film yet, but after seeing a rough cut, Oates shared that the film is a “totally feminist interpretation” of Monroe’s revolutionary legacy. Directed by Andrew Dominic ( The Assassination of Jesse James by the Cowardly Robert Ford ).
