“Gremlins” was a 1984 film that revolved around a boy named Billy, who receives a peculiar pet that is supposed to be a species called Mogwai.

In Chinese culture, the word mogwai comes from Cantonese and means “monster,” “evil spirit,” and even “demon.”

Similarly, in English urban tales, a gremlin is a malevolent, mythological creature that often sabotages machinery or performs other mischief.

All of this served as inspiration for the original film, but the HBO Max series will put a twist on it. Although you will have the same warnings: “No bright lights, don’t get him wet, and most importantly, never feed him after midnight.”.

“Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai” is an animated series that adapts the film directed by Joe Dante. The story is set in China and follows a group of children trying to protect a Mogwai named Gizmo from the clutches of dark forces.

In the official synopsis, it is detailed that the program “will focus on how 10-year-old Sam Wing met a young Mogwai named Gizmo. Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo embark on a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering and sometimes battling colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore.
