8 Debuts in the Italian National Team: 2 ‘Foreign Players’, Donnarumma Replaced by Serie B Goalkeepers

Roberto Mancini has announced the list of Italian national team players for the 2022 World Cup Qualification match against North Macedonia. In the squad that Mancini chose, there are eight players who do not have caps.

From the existing list, Mari Balotelli gets a sharp spotlight. Because, after three years of absence, Balotelli again had the opportunity to play in the Italian national team. The stigma of badass players also made Balotelli in the spotlight.

But, behind all the stories about Balotelli, there are several names that are also worth discussing. Gianluigi Donnarumma is not in the squad. Instead, there was goalkeeper from Serie B club, Marco Carnesecchi, who was called up.

In total, there are seven players who have been called by Mancini for the first time to the Italian national team squad. Then, there is one player who has been called up but has not yet made his debut with the Italian national team.

Marco Carnesecchi
Mancini did not call Donnarumma to the Italian national team. Instead, there were four goalkeepers called up. One of them is Carnesecchi who plays for Serie B club, Cremonese.

Carnesecchi has played for Cremonese for two seasons, on loan from Atalanta. This season, he has performed well for Cremonese. The 21-year-old goalkeeper recorded five clean sheets.

Luiz Felipe
Luiz Felipe for the first time called up to the Italian national team. He is not a player born in Italy. However, the 24-year-old defender has been active in Italy for a long time.

The player who was born in Brazil first came to Italy in 2016. He joined Serie B club Salernitana. A season later, he recruited Lazio and still plays for the club to this day.

Giorgio Scalvini
He is still very young, 18 years old. Minutes played at club level are also minimal. So far, Scalvini has only played six games in Serie A with Atalanta. Only once did he become a core player.

But, Mancini certainly had reasons why he had to bring Scalvini to the Italian senior team. Scalvini has performed well with the Italy U-17, U-19 and U-21 national teams. So, it’s time for Scalvini to get promoted to the senior team.

Nicolo Fagioli
Mancini’s decision to call Fagioli was unique. Because the 20-year-old player plays for Serie B. This season, Fagioli plays at Cremonese, a team with Carnesecchi, but on loan from Juventus.

Fagioli performed quite well with Cremonese. Fagioli scored three goals from 17 matches in Serie B. Cremonese is also competing for promotion to Serie A. Fagioli himself made his debut for Juventus in the 2020/2021 season.

Frattesi is a player plotted to replace Manuel Locatelli in the Sassuolo midfield. His role is very important. In 22 games played in Serie A, Frattesi has scored four goals for Sassuolo.

Frattesi is actually a player from the AS Roma youth team. Sassuolo bought Frattesi in 2017 for 5 million euros. After being ‘schooled’ into Serie B for three seasons, Frattesi is now a mature player.

Samuele Ricci
In the next few seasons, Ricci may be the target of other top Italian clubs. Because, at the age of 20, he performed consistently with Empoli and earned a place in the first team.

Ricci became a key player who brought Empoli promotion to Serie A in the 2021/2022 season. Now, he is an irreplaceable player in the midfield. Ricci has the ability to keep the rhythm of the game well.

Weather in Mattia Zaccagni
Zaccagni has actually received a call from Mancini on previous occasions. However, he hasn’t made his debut yet. Zaccagni has not been able to compete for a place in midfield.

Zaccagni, on loan from Hellas Verona, has performed quite well with Lazio. Although not Maurizio Sarri’s main choice, Zaccagni often comes as a supersub at Lazio.

João Pedro
Joao Pedro was born in Brazil, to be precise in Ipatinga. Like Luiz Felipe, he has been in Italy for a long time. In fact, it is no exaggeration to call Pedro a Cagliari legend.

Joao Pedro defended Cagliari since 2014. When Cagliari went down to Serie B, he didn’t move. The last three seasons, Joao Pedro has always scored double-digit goals in Serie A. The 29-year-old player deserves a call-up to the Italian national team for his performances.
