It came as no surprise to the MLB world when the New York Yankees announced that they had designated Aaron Hicks for assignment.
The 33-year-old’s 11-year-old major league veteran’s situation had worsened in recent seasons as his long history of injuries was compounded by low offensive production and botched outfield defense.
That put an end to the patience of the fans – and also of the organization – who booed him at every home game in 2023. But the case of Hicks is not unique, there are other players who exhausted the fans of the Bronx team.
The Yankees celebrated the Dominican’s return to the organization when they took him off waivers in 2022, but the truth is that Abreu hasn’t exactly been a reliable man, despite earning a spot in the bullpen. Ian Anderson’s injury will buy him a bit more time at the club, but his right-hander hasn’t looked good in 2023. Manager Aaron Boone has called him up to pitch in 17 games and has allowed 18 hits and 13 runs . He has a 4.50 ERA and a 1-1 record with 24 fanouts in 22.0 innings pitched.
