For those of you who are planning to watch A World Without tomorrow on Netflix, let’s first look at the interesting facts about this film.
1. The initial idea of the story from the habits of young people
At the A World Without press conference on Tuesday (12/10/2021), director Nia Dinata shared the initial idea for the film’s story.
The initial idea of A World Without was first coined by Nia Dinata and Lucky Kuswandi in mid-2018.
The two of them had in-depth discussions about the culture of young people in Indonesia who like to spend a lot of time on social media.
This ultimately shapes their opinions, lifestyles, and life goals.
The need for validation has skyrocketed and is accompanied by an increasing need to demonstrate one’s own beliefs.
2. The process of writing in the open and so therapeutic
For almost two years, Nia and Lucky worked on the plot and story while doing more in-depth research on the lives of young people.
But just as the process got underway and Netflix started showing interest, a pandemic hit.
The writing took place during the first social activity restriction
in Jakarta, so the writer’s space shifted to an open place in nature.
This process turned out to be a kind of therapy for scriptwriters, you know.
The conditions at that time also provided more room for imagination and real representations with the theme of sisterhood.
“Actually, a rough draft of the script has been written for a long time. But while we were polishing and finishing it, a pandemic hit in early 2020,” said the director who is familiarly called Teh Nia.
“I thought life would definitely change, so I used a creative license to make a story about how anything can happen and create a world in this film,” he explained further.
3. Films set in 2030
A World Without is set in 2030, where the future becomes unpredictable for three friends named Salina, Ulfah, and Tara.
The characters of the three friends are played by Amanda Rawles, Maizura, and Asmara Abigail.
These three teenage girls are looking for a purpose in life until they finally find a training center called The Light.
The Light was founded by the charismatic Ali Khan and his wife, Sofia, played by renowned actors and actresses Chicco Jerikho and Ayushita.
“We chose 2030 because the time is not so far away, but it can still be seen as the future,” said Nia Dinata.
“Therefore, costumes and locations are very important elements
to create the universe in this film,” he added.
